3 Types of Calorie Burn
First type of calorie burn.
The first type is the thermic effect of eating. between 10 and 30 percent of the calories that you burn each day get burned by the simple act of digesting food. This is why starving yourself will actually hinder your weight loss. As I've mentioned in previous posts, digesting protein burns up to 50 percent more calories than carbohydrates. Therefore you should increase your intake of healthy lean proteins.
Second type of calorie burn.
Another 10 - 15 percent of the calories burned comes form exercise and movement. Whether you're lifting weights, going for a run or simply flipping through the pages of a book, your body will be burning calories.
Third type of calorie burn.
The third type of calorie burn is also the biggest and is called basal metabolism or resting metabolism. This is the type calorie burn that happens when your doing nothing at all. 60 - 80 percent of your daily calories are burned up just doing nothing. These calories are burned up just to keep you alive.
Now if you take a good look at all these you'll see that most of the calories that we burn each day are burnt up by your body performing physiological functions. Like breathing, digesting food etc... That's why in order to lose weight you have to increase the amount of calories you burn doing nothing. You have to increase your basal metabolism by eating foods that make you burn more calories and doing exercises that burn more calories throughout the day rather than during the workout. The calories you burn in the gym are not important. Its the calories that, that workout makes you burn for the next 48 hours that counts. Thats why you have to make sure that you are eating the right foods and doing the right exercises.
